BITS Hyderabad Students Develop GPS-Free Drone Navigation System, Now Being Tested By Indian Army

A technology originally designed to help drones navigate on Mars is finding applications closer to home. BITS Hyderabad students Naman Kasliwal and Shiv Patil have developed an indigenous navigation system that enables drones to operate without relying on GPS signals.

The idea began with the challenge of navigating drones on Mars, where GPS infrastructure is unavailable. During their research, an Indian Army officer recognised its potential for military applications, particularly in areas where GPS signals are jammed or disrupted. The development highlights how student-led innovation can contribute to India's defence technology ecosystem.
