KumaonKhand Builds a Hemp-Based Business with 2,000+ Farmers in Uttarakhand

What if one crop could create new livelihoods for farmers while supporting sustainable products across multiple industries? Uttarakhand-based social enterprise KumaonKhand is building a hemp-based ecosystem that connects local farmers with markets for food, skincare, textiles and sustainable construction materials. Founded in 2021, the venture has grown from an initial network of 15 farmers to working with more than 2,000 farmers, around 95% of whom are women.

Led by Founder Pavitra Joshi, KumaonKhand has developed a decentralised processing model across the Kumaon region, helping convert locally grown hemp into products such as hemp seed oil, protein powder, skincare products and textiles. The company also supplies hemp seed oil to established brands, exports to international markets and is exploring hemp-based construction materials. Beyond building a business, its model aims to create additional income opportunities for women farmers and strengthen the local Himalayan economy.
