Pune Startup Proximal Soilsens Develops a 'Soil Glucometer' to Help Farmers Test Soil Nutrients Directly in the Field

Pune-based agritech startup Proximal Soilsens is bringing laboratory-style soil testing closer to Indian farmers with its patented NutriSense X, a portable device often described as a “glucometer for soil.” Developed through nearly a decade of research originating at IIT Bombay, the device analyses essential soil parameters, including nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, pH and organic carbon. Led by founder Dr Rajul Patkar, the company aims to make reliable soil information more accessible without requiring farmers to depend entirely on conventional testing laboratories.
The technology has already reached 16–17 states through deployments involving farmer producer organisations, institutions and development organisations. Proximal Soilsens is also exploring new applications in water-quality monitoring and sap analysis to expand its sensor-based agricultural technology portfolio. By helping farmers make more informed fertiliser decisions, innovations like NutriSense X could play an important role in advancing precision agriculture in India. Can portable soil-testing technology change how Indian farmers manage their fields?
