IIT Madras Startup AstraYAN Emerges L1 For Naval Propulsion Integration Tender

A 15-member Indian deep-tech startup has outcompeted established international players in a major naval engineering tender. Chennai-based, IIT Madras-incubated AstraYAN has emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) for the Propulsion System Integration (PSI) assignment for five of the Indian Navy’s Next Generation Corvettes. The tender process reportedly began with five global participants, including Italy’s Fincantieri, Spain’s Navantia and Germany’s RENK. After technical and commercial evaluation, AstraYAN qualified alongside Fincantieri and RENK, becoming the only Indian supplier among the three finalists.
The assignment involves integrating complex propulsion machinery, transmission architecture and control systems. While the selection marks a significant milestone for India’s indigenous defence technology ecosystem, price negotiations and formal contract finalisation remain ahead. The wider ₹32,000 crore figure relates to GRSE’s five-warship construction programme, not AstraYAN’s disclosed contract value.
